Continuing Testosterone | The Menopause Clinic

Continuing Testosterone

To continue refills safely and on time, four ongoing requirements must stay current: a quarterly hormone check-in, labs every 6 months, an in-person visit (once a year or before your refill — whichever comes first), and an annual consent form.

Read the Testosterone Therapy Patient Guide

Please review the full patient guide for important information about your therapy, what to expect, and how to use your medication safely.

Plan ahead: An in-person visit is required once every 12 months or before your refill — whichever comes first. Many patients find their medication lasts 8–10 months, but this varies and we cannot estimate it for you. Please schedule your in-person visit at least 2–3 weeks before your medication runs out to avoid refill delays.

Ongoing Requirements

1
Complete your quarterly hormone check-in
Required every 3 months. A brief symptom check-in that helps us confirm your hormone status, dosing, and watch for early side effects.
2
Complete your labs
Required before your refill — updated labs are needed every 6 months. Pick the option that fits you below and send us the matching message. With cash-pay (Rupa), results come straight to us — nothing for you to upload. With insurance, retrieving and sharing your results is on you (steps below).

Option 1 — Use insurance

We upload a lab requisition for you to take to an in-network lab. Check your out-of-pocket cost first — if it's more than $150, cash-pay (Option 2) is usually cheaper. Insurance labs don't come back to us automatically, and we have no account or visibility with outside labs — so retrieving them, uploading them, and telling us they're ready is your responsibility. See the steps below.

This is the message you'll send us — it confirms you understand how insurance labs work on your end. Please send it as written.

Option 2 — Cash-pay (Rupa Labs)

Great for high-deductible plans. Usually under $120. We send the order, Rupa emails you instructions, and results come directly to us. Message us to confirm exact cost.

If you use insurance (Option 1), here's what's required on your end:
1
Check the cost first. If your out-of-pocket portion runs more than $150, our cash-pay option (usually under $120) is likely cheaper — and those results come straight to us.
2
Make sure your results show your full name and the test date so we can match them to your chart.
3
About 10–12 days after your draw, check your account with the lab — that's typically when results are ready.
4
Upload them to your portal: log in → Documents & Handouts → upload.
5
Tell us once they're uploaded — message your provider in the portal or email info@menopauselouisiana.com. We can't see when or where you had labs done, so your refills can't continue until your results are uploaded and you've let us know.

⚠️ Stop biotin 72 hours before labs. This includes anything labeled Biotin, B7, or Vitamin H — biotin can interfere with certain lab results.
3
Schedule & complete your in-person visit
For testosterone, an in-person visit is required once every 12 months or before your refill — whichever comes first. Refills cannot be processed without a current in-person visit. Location: 700 Camp St, New Orleans, LA.
🗓️ How the timing works: Most patients' medication lasts 8–10 months, so the refill usually comes up before the 12-month mark — that means your visit is due when your refill is, not on your anniversary date. If your medication lasts longer than a year, the 12-month mark applies instead. Either way: no current in-person visit, no refill.
📍 Street parking is available, and there are paid lots nearby — 732 Camp St is on the same block. When you arrive, enter through the front door on Camp Street and have a seat in the lobby. Crystal will come down to greet you and bring you upstairs. If you arrive early, feel free to relax — she'll come get you at your scheduled time.
4
Sign the annual testosterone consent form
Required once per year, before refill. Steps can be completed in any order but all must be done before your refill is processed.

Quick FAQ

When exactly do I need an in-person visit?
For testosterone, an in-person visit is required once every 12 months or before your refill — whichever comes first. Because most patients' medication lasts 8–10 months, the refill usually comes first, so plan your visit around when your medication will run out — not around your last visit's anniversary. Refills cannot be processed without a current visit.
Where can I find the Testosterone Patient Guide?
You can open the Testosterone Therapy Patient Guide here. It's also available in your portal under Documents & Handouts — search "testosterone."
What's normal at this stage of treatment?
Check the What to Expect tab on your symptom tracker for the typical timeline — when changes usually begin, what's normal at each stage, and what's worth messaging us about.
How long will my medication last?
Many patients find it lasts 8–10 months, but this varies and we cannot estimate it for you. Schedule your in-person visit at least 2–3 weeks before you expect to run out — a current visit is required before your refill can be processed.
What if I'm overdue on labs, my visit, or the consent form?
We may not be able to process refills until all required items are completed. Staying ahead of these requirements prevents last-minute delays in your care.
