How to Apply Your Estrogen Patch — The Menopause Clinic
How to Apply Your Estrogen Patch
A quick guide to applying your patch and helping it stay on better.
The Menopause Clinic
Where to place it
Choose the right spot
Apply to clean, dry skin on the lower abdomen, hip, buttock, or upper outer thigh — below the waistline. Avoid the breasts, and don't reuse the exact same spot two times in a row.
Step 1 — If it won't stick
Clean the skin
If your patch won't stay on, first wipe the skin with an alcohol pad to remove lotion, oil, or residue.
Step 2
Let it dry
Allow the skin to dry completely before applying the patch.
Step 3
Peel & press
Peel the backing off, trying not to touch the sticky side. Place the patch firmly on the skin and press down well for about 10 seconds.
If sticking is a problem
Warm the adhesive
Use a blow dryer on low / warm heat for about 10 seconds to gently warm the adhesive, then press the patch down again.
Use low / warm heat only.
Check the fit
Is it lying flat?
Let your provider know if the patch is wrinkling, not staying flat, or not staying on. We can adjust your plan so you're getting the full dose.
If you get redness
Patch irritation?
Some people notice redness or irritation from the adhesive. One option some patients find helpful: spray an over-the-counter steroid nasal spray on the skin, let it dry completely, then apply the patch.
Talk with your provider if irritation continues.
